(More customer reviews)I think the two reviewers gave poor scores to this product are not experienced and are buying the wrong product for their needs.Having to travel very frequently for work and used quite a few noise cancelling headphones on 737, 757 and 747 flights, I have to say this product is pretty darn good.I picked it up at a local big chain drugstore for a ridiculously low price on clearance.I was very concerned about the product when I read the reviews but totally changed my perception when I tried this product.
Here are my take on this:
Sound quality: as one other reviewer pointed out, the mid-range is muddled.Higher frequencies are pretty clean and lower frequencies bass are a bit exaggerated.I disagree that an sound engineer wasn't consulted.Actually I think Cody did an really good job.
Build quality: good plastic and nice finish.Foam padding is reasonable comfortable after long wear.Adjustable headband is done on a metal track.Overall, surprisingly good quality for a brand such as Coby.Markly better than Philips.God knows my Philips' didn't even last one translantic flight.
Overall design: excellent!!! These engineers have taken a lot of flights and or train rides to know what's important and what's not!
1) single-sided removable cord <=== godsend.I can neatly fold the cord without having wrap it around the headphone and won't have to deal with tangling wires during flight.
2) cord is thick and sturdy <=== awesome. It will be greatly needed when you rough handle it on a long flight.
3) Noise reduction <=== definitely works. It's meant to filter out lower frequency noise like the jet engine humming sound.I did a spectrum sweep and it definitely filters out the lower range as spec'd.The attenutation is actually better than Philips'.
4) Audio profile <=== just fine. When you are on a flight, you care about two things: 1) high frequencies for understanding speech and 2) lower frequencies to overcome the humming noise and help compensate for the ones filtered out by the active noise cancellign filter; 3) mid-range is not all that important when you have 4 jet engines going at cruising speed. This headphone hits all these areas.
I took one point off because the mid-range is a bit too muddled.Otherwise, this is a great product at a really cheap price.I would pick this over the commonly availabe Philips' (at Wal-mart and Target).
